The Red Ants have embarked on development of a Food Processing Factory that is currently under construction. Red Ants will be Canning and Bottling processed food for distribution to informal traders through the South African Association for Informal Traders and to local retailers as well as export of excess produce.
The decision to develop the food processing factory was informed by the fact that the Red Ants are already active in Crop production and Animal husbandry. These will form a basis and supply chain to the factory. Red Ants have been piloting this project on a smaller scale to build capacity and recruit skills. They are ready to ramp up production immediately when construction and fitment of the factory is complete.
Significant research was carried out by the company to gather as much information as possible about this venture. The Company has spent considerable resources to build and fully fit Fish Farms to embark in this business.
In addition to the food processing, the factory will also have a specialised and fully equipped butchery that will be used to carve and package beef, lamb, mutton, pork and chicken. The butchery will be linked to current plans to expand on the animal stock numbers especially lamb, pigs and chicken. There is significant scope for expansion with demand for meat especially for local consumption which has been growing at a considerable rate over the past couple of months.
The challenges in this type of business still remain access to water and skilled personnel to drive the business. We have put in place mechanisms to try and manage these challenges to minimize their impact on the overall running of the business. We are proud as business that despite these tough economic conditions, we continue to create employment and initiate skills transfer through initiatives such as development of this factory.
